Grace Cunard and Helen Holmes were wonder women behind and in front of the camera. Cunard wrote, starred in and often directed a series of action vehicles, while Holmes is best known for such adventure films as THE HAZARDS OF HELEN series.

Restoration! THE PURPLE MASK Episode 12: “The Vault of Mystery” (1917, 20 min.) Teaming with frequent collaborator Francis Ford (director John’s brother), Grace Cunard plays Patricia Montez, a sort of benevolent Fantômas, who uses her skills to evade an investigator (Ford) and redistribute ill-gotten gains from the wealthy. Color-Tinted Restoration! THE HAZARDS OF HELEN Episode: “The Wild Engine” (1915, 11 min.) Comprised of stand-alone episodes rather than the usual cliffhanger, this stunt-packed film series stars Helen Holmes as the titular heroine, here rescuing the passengers of a runaway train. Color-Tinted 2K Restoration!

1925, 77 min, USA, Dir: Walter Lang, Dorothy Davenport

This sensationalistic drama stars Priscilla Bonner as Gabrielle Darley, who is swept off her feet by an older man only to be deposited in a New Orleans brothel; though she eventually frees herself, scandal continues to dog the young woman. With her late husband stigmatized for drug use, narrator Davenport implores audiences not to judge the central character - which didn’t stop the real-life Gabrielle Darley from filing a lawsuit.
