OLD VINES AND NEW VINTAGE: A TRIBUTE TO GERARD DEPARDIEU
Presented in collaboration with Los Angeles Film & TV Office, French Embassy

August 27, 28 & 31, 2011

A school dropout who became a Legion of Honor recipient, Gerard Depardieu is one of France’s - and global cinema’s - most distinguished performers. He started out taking parts not too far removed from his rough-and-tumble roots, but any attempt to typecast Depardieu is doomed to failure. Equally at ease in the comedy GOING PLACES as in the period drama THE RETURN OF MARTIN GUERRE, the actor’s versatility quickly made him a favorite of European directors including Bertrand Blier, Alain Resnais, Francois Truffaut and Claude Berri. With varied film choices reflecting the actor’s taste for adventure, there is a larger-than-life quality to Depardieu that’s well suited to playing men of substance from history (DANTON) and classic literature (CYRANO DE BERGERAC).

Despite threats to retire from motion pictures (a successful winery keeps him busy), this workaholic continues to add to his lengthy cinematic résumé; among his latest is MY AFTERNOONS WITH MARGUERITTE, which will be sneak previewed this month at the American Cinematheque. Like the man who plays him, the film’s Germain is both earthy and sophisticated, spurred on by a childlike openness. It’s the same thirst for new experiences that brought Gerard Depardieu from a rural French village to movie screens around the world.
