Terence Davies In Person!

Sun, Mar 11, 2012 - Mon, Mar 12, 2012

Arguably the greatest living British filmmaker, Terence Davies first established himself with three celebrated shorts, known collectively as THE TERENCE DAVIES TRILOGY. Like his trilogy, subsequent features DISTANT VOICES, STILL LIVES and THE LONG DAY CLOSES are set in postwar England, which inspires the elemental dichotomy at the heart of Davies’ work: a contrast between the somber outside world and the intimate interior world, where a promise of warmth and camaraderie is tempered by poverty and the threat of violence or isolation. Join us for this in-person tribute to Terence Davies, which will also include a Members-only screening of his most recent film, THE DEEP BLUE SEA, starring Rachel Weisz.

Thu, Mar 1, 2012 - Thu, Mar 8, 2012

Master Swedish director Ingmar Bergman (1918 - 2007) wrote and directed more than 60 films in his lauded career and is commonly cited as a major influence on celebrated filmmakers from Stanley Kubrick to Andrei Tarkovsky to Woody Allen. With each work, Bergman became ever more incisive and rigorous in his study of the human psyche, contributing to cinema such masterpieces as THE SEVENTH SEAL, THE MAGICIAN, THE VIRGIN SPRING, HOUR OF THE WOLF, PERSONA and later AUTUMN SONATA and FANNY AND ALEXANDER.

Fri, Feb 17, 2012 - Fri, Feb 24, 2012

Italian director Sergio Leone began his career with the sword-and-sandals opus COLOSSUS OF RHODES in 1961. In 1964, inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s YOJIMBO, Leone helmed A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, which starred then virtually unknown Clint Eastwood, followed by its sequel, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE, and the majestic conclusion of the trilogy, THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY. This month's retrospective also includes ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST and the tragicomic DUCK YOU SUCKER (aka A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE).
